From Staff Reports

They say a tie is like kissing your sister.

And as much as Poly wanted a win Friday afternoon, a lot worse could have occurred than what turned out to be a 14-14 tie.

It was Poly’s first real test of the season, and despite a tie, which included three overtime periods in which neither team could score, the Panthers are better off for the effort, coach Chris Schmoke said.

The hardest part, though, when looking back, will be an opportunity in overtime when all the Panthers’ needed was a 22-yard field goal for the win, and they were not able to convert.

Jackson Hayes continues a great start to his senior season.

Hayes had 2 catches for 68 yards and a TD, and he also picked off Brentwood three times.

Graham Olson completed 10 of 22 passes for 203 yards.

He threw two TD’s and was picked twice.

Aside from his connection to Hayes, Olson also hit Franco Alonso for another Poly TD.

Alonso caught 2 passes for 90 yards, including the score.

Olson led the Poly ground attack with 77 yards on 14 carries, and Cameron McFarlane carried the ball 14 times for 73 yards.

On defense, Christian Henderson had two tackles and he picked off Brentwood once.

McFarlane had nine tackles, and two were for loss.

Alonso led the Panthers with 10 tackles, including two minus-yard sticks.

Thomas McConnell finished with 8 tackles (two for loss), and Hayes had four tackles.

Poly will host Mary Star of the Sea next Saturday at 2 p.m.

Quotable:

Poly coach Chris Schmoke: “We did (get better). We are not to our potential yet, but we blocked a little better and found a few more successes on offense. We are finding more ways to get guys the ball in space. We went down 7-0 and 14-7 and the kids never quit. I was really proud of the effort.”
