Freshman Yesenia Marin scored five goals on all five of her shot attempts in the Pasadena City College women’s water polo team’s 16-1 victory over Santa Ana Sept. 9. That meant Marin had remarkably scored on her first eight collegiate shots this season. While she finally was stopped in the opening quarter of the team’s third game against San Diego Miramar, Marin still cashed in two more goals in an 11-8 loss to the Jets to cap the the LA Valley Tournament.
Christy Lam also was a perfect 5-for-5 in the Santa Ana win and Camila Grasas added five assists. Briana Campos added two goals and two assists and Zuri Pulido also tallied a pair of scores. The Lancers scored four goals in each of the four quarters.
Against Miramar, Marin’s streak of made attempts ended in the opening quarter on a point-blank block, but the center forward from Pasadena High followed the rebound to net a goal. The teams were tied at 5-5 at halftime but Miramar would take a 10-5 lead in the fourth period. PCC rallied for three goals in a span of three-plus minutes but the deficit was too much. Pulido finished with five goals (11 shots). Goalie Mariah York helped keep the Lancers close as she made five saves and five steals (two right from the opponent’s center forward).
“We played well in all facets of the game against Miramar,” said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. “Really proud of the team’s effort at the Valley Tournament. Yesenia just had a super start to her Lancers career. She really is a sharp shooter and she’s going to get plenty more goals this season. With Zuri and Christy, we have the ability to score frequently.”
PCC (1-2 overall) will play at Cerritos College on Wednesday, Sept. 13 in a 3 p.m. South Coast Conference game.
