In a non-league season that has been marked by inconsistent but steady growth, this was another winnable match for the Lady Minutemen. In the first round, MHS held late-set leads in two sets, 4-1 and 5-4, only two lose both, leaving them behind, 2-4, with wins from #1 singles, Angela Hsieh (6-1), and #3 doubles, Hellen Hong and Stella Wang (6-3).

The second round was another 2-4 affair, with wins coming from Hsieh (6-0) and #2 singles, Malena Smith, and putting the score at 4-8.

The final round was a 3-3 draw, with Hsieh completing her sweep (6-1), Smith dominating the Tigers’ substitute player (6-0), and the #1 doubles team of Maddie Hernandez and Michael Wilkins registering their only win of the day, 6-4.

The Lady Minutemen certainly had their opportunities to pull off the upset over the undefeated Tigers, but weren’t up to the task of closing out when they had their chances to do so.

Maranatha plays its final non-league match on 9/19 against Pasadena High School. It may prove to be a critical match in their season. They have yet to pull together a complete match with both singles and doubles stepping up to the challenge on the same day against an higher division opponent. They have one more opportunity to prove to themselves that they have what it takes to be contenders come play-off time.
