The Pasadena City College men’s cross country team went up against a group of 4-year universities and a few 2-year colleges at the Master’s University 6th Mustang Challenge Sept. 30. The Lancers ran on the Central Park, Santa Clarita course that will be the site of the Southern California Champions, but with a twist–they participated in a longer, 8-kilometer race.
Sophomore Eduardo Urbina held his own as the fastest Lancer as he finished 56th out of 154 total runners with a time of 26 minutes, 40.2 seconds over a course that is nearly a mile longer than the usual 4-miles length. PCC placed 15th out of 17 scoring teams in an event won by UCLA. LA Harbor was the only other California Community College team in the combined race.
Other Lancers taking part were letterman Felipe Loera (28:06) and freshmen Dylan Che (28:57) and Trevor Abe (29:18). Sophomore Alexis Arevalo was the fifth PCC racer at 31:18.7.
“For the men moving up from three to four miles is challenging enough (for the freshmen). They all moved up to five miles here, but because of their dedication to training, were able to put down some competitive marks,” said PCC assistant coach Steve Laguna.
PCC head coach Innocent Egbunike said that this will help prepare the team for future races because the runners had to “push themselves to finish a longer course.” He also said that it will benefit those that make it to the SoCal Championships in November as it will be the third time that Pasadena harriers run at Central Park.
Next up for the Lancers is the Mt. SAC Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13.
