The sizzling Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team won for the ninth time its last 10 matches Wednesday night in defeating host Rio Hondo College, 25-9, 25-13, 25-16. PCC continues its stranglehold on first place in the South Coast Conference North Division at 5-0.

PCC (14-9 overall) hit an outstanding .342 for the match with Kendall Schmedes scoring nine kills (.471, and two aces) and Vanessa Lopez adding eight kills (also .471) and a team-high 12 digs. Lania Potter pounded seven kills (.353) and had a solo block. Libero Kelsey Sarreal made 10 digs.

“It was a very sharp performance v. Rio Hondo,” said PCC head coach Mike Terrill. “We prepped well and executed our game plan from the first serve to the finish. We maintained pressure on Rio. It was another excellent performance by setter Emily Leung (25 assists) and middle blocker Lania Potter. Paige Clingaman and Vanessa Lopez were outstanding as well.”

Terrill also liked the defensive play of his back row that included Sarreal and Grace Crawford. The sophomore Leung is the conference’s overall assists leader at 9.22 per set, good enough for 10th in the state.

Now on a 5-match road winning streak, the Lancers play at East Los Angeles College on Friday, Nov. 3 in a 6 p.m. conference match.
