Caltech Head Coach Jon Bonafede has been named SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Coach of the Year for the first time as voted on by the conference coaches.

Bonafede’s Beavers took a huge step forward in 2017 by winning eight games in one of the team’s best seasons in recent memory. Caltech earned its first SCIAC victory since 2001 over Occidental College on Sept. 27, then went on to sweep the Tigers, first with a victory at the Gary Troyer Tournament, then with another victory in Eagle Rock. The Beavers also increased their margin of victory with each Oxy win, showcasing their growth over the course of the season.

“It is an honor to be recognized by my colleagues for this award, especially in a conference with so many talented teams and savvy coaches,” Bonafede said. “I am very proud of the hard work and dedication that my team and coaching staff put in this year and I am grateful to represent Caltech.”

Bonafede also received some aid in the form of an outstanding recruiting class that featured Second Team All-SCIAC Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis), Alex Janosi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), Rahul Arun (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E Stevenson), John Wang (Louisville, Ky. / Phillips Exeter Academy) and Nick Clausen (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East), all of whom should have roles in the gradual improvement of the program over time.

With Richard May (Guilford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) acting as the only graduating senior, the Beavers will have the opportunity to build on their stellar 2017 season in 2018 with newly minted Coach of the Year Bonafede leading the way.
