From STAFF REPORTS

Two of the area’s best big men faced off in the season openers for both Muir and Blair.

And while Hunter Woods of Muir, and Dez Washington of Blair started slowly offensively, both stars did so many things Tuesday night to give their teams a chance to win.

It was Woods, though, and his 16 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks that led the Mustangs to a 64-56 victory over the Vikings in the first round of the Maranatha Tournament.

Woods didn’t shoot well, but he made 9 of 10 free-throw attempts.

Washington said it took himself a while to get started, but the Vikings’ stud had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. He also added five steals.

Tasson Aubry had 15 points and 6 rebounds for Muir, and Nick Moore and Tiyon Martin had 11 points apiece for the Mustangs.

Aubry grabbed 5 rebounds, and Martin added 9 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.

Blair’s Dallas Murray finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Donald Guyton had 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Muir will face Alemany on Thursday at 8 after the Warriors defeated Palisades, and Blair will face the Dolphins at 5.

All games are being played at Maranatha High School.

Muir Scoring: Hunter Woods 16, Tasson Aubry 15, Nick Moore 11, Tiyon Martin 11, Haleem Jenkins 10, Simaine Stewart Jr. 2.

Blair Scoring: Dez Washington 21, Dallas Murray 12, Donald Guyton 11, Russell Thraikill 4, Favour Ihiaso 4, Ben Harris 2, Elijah Howard 2.

Quotable:

Muir coach Simaine Stewart: “Our effort was great, but our execution was really bad. Give all the credit to Blair. They did exactly what they were supposed to do to disrupt our offense. We will have a shoot around and get ready for our next battle.”

Muir senior Hunter Woods: “I feel like the team as a whole played well. Our young guys stepped up big tonight with their energy off the bench. Our big men were killing them on the glass tonight, so I feel like we beat them in the post. Everyone had first-game jitters and couldn’t really make a shot. But that is OK because everyone just has those days where you can’t buy a bucket. I was happy with the team grinding out that win tonight, and I feel like our defense is what is going to win us a lot of games. I felt like I played really hard on the defensive end and was attacking the glass. I couldn’t really make a shot, but I still found ways to get to the free-throw line, and knock down free throws.”

Box Score:
Muir: 13-14-15-22-(64)
Blair: 12-10-15-19-(56)
