Eric Rivero Soccer PicIt might have seemed from the outside like La Salle’s 1-2 start was an ominous beginning to the 2017-18 season.

But those within the program knew the Lancers were starting a first-time goalie and it would take time for him to get used to the game, as well as the Lancers’ offense to find a rhythm.

La Salle is 2-0-1 since the slow start.

And that includes Saturday morning’s 2-0 victory at Pasadena.

That goalie, La Salle junior CJ Rettig, blocked an incredible 15 shots in shutting down the Bulldogs offense.

La Salle vs PHS boys soccer 2Eric Rivero and Daniel Piesik both had second-half goals to account for the Lancers’ offense.

It was Rivero’s third goal of the season.

Piesik’s goal was assisted by Cristian Reyes.

La Salle will play in the Duarte Tournament starting on December 27.

Quotable:

La Salle forward Eric Rivero: “We started off slow today, but we proved we can be competitive against any team. We need to continue working hard in practice and in games so we continually improve. Winning league is one of our main goals. We needed today’s win, it was important. CJ is a great player for this being just his first year, so imagine by the end of the season how good he’ll be after all the training and touches on the ball. We are a team, but he’s a big part of it, and he played a huge part in the win today.”

La Salle goalie CJ Rettig: “Our team is extremely skillful and young, and we’re getting better as a team by every game that we play. We have a special group of guys this year. As my first time playing goalie, I am going with the flow, but I really couldn’t have done it (kept improving) without my teammates.”
