From STAFF REPORTS

Muir knew before taking the court Monday night how important the next five days are for their basketball program.

The Mustangs have three Pacific League games and began the week in the league’s top spot.

Arcadia got off to a hot start and was the polar opposite for Muir.

The Apaches held the Mustangs to 17 first-half points.

At half time, though, the seniors took over in the locker room and affirmed that the second half would be different.

And they were right.

Muir used a 46-33 second-half surge and edged the Apaches, 63-60.

Arcadia had pulled to within 61-60 with just under 12 seconds to play.

The Mustangs got the ball to their senior star Hunter Woods.

After the Apaches fouled Woods, he calmly sunk both free throws and extended the lead to 63-60.

Arcadia still had time to attempt a game-tying 3-pointer but after the Mustangs played smothering defense, the Apaches fired up one last shot and it wasn’t close.

It was a relief for all at Muir, considering the three league games to be played over a 5-day span.

Woods finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Tiyon Martin was huge with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

Tasson Aubry and Haleem Jenkins both chipped in 10 points apiece.

Simaine Stewart Junior finished with 10 points, too, and he added 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

Arcadia’s Jay Yoon led all scorers with 23 points and Jason Cardenas had 15.

Quotable:

Muir coach Simaine Stewart: “First half, we couldn’t score. We missed shots we normally make. Arcadia played great offensively and we couldn’t put it down. They missed maybe 5 or 7 shots all first half. Defensively we got back to our principles. We went to more of a zone set and it made them make plays.

We know we’ve got guys that if we called their number, they could have 30. At the end of the day, each guy that contribute makes a defense have to play honest. We’re trusting the process and everybody is buying in.”

Box Score:
Arcadia: 15-12-14-19-(60)
Muir: 6-11-24-22-(63)

Records:
Muir (11-5, 3-0); Arcadia (4-4, 1-2)
