From STAFF REPORTS

Two weeks ago, there was talk La Salle might not make the playoffs after a pair of one-run losses to St. Paul.

But the Lancers regrouped and are a completely different team.

After a two-game sweep over first-place Bishop Amat last week, and a pair of wins over the cellar-dwellars from Cathedral, the Lancers end the regular season as the hottest team in the Del Rey League.

On Thursday, La Salle rode the winning combo of starter Landon Smith and closer Jeff Daley to a 4-2 victory over the Phantoms in Los Angeles.

Smith went 4 2/3 innings, and allowed just one run on one hit to earn the win.

Smith walked four and struck out five batters.

Daley has become one of, if not the area’s most reliable closer.

The senior right hander went the final 2 1/3 innings and he surrendered one run on one hit to get the save.

La Salle got to Cathedral’s Johnnie Virgin for four runs and 11 hits.

Peter Thorsen went 3 for 3, including a double and the senior scored a run.

Ethan Patrick tripled, and finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and run scored.

Mark Daley had two hits and an RBI and Brennan Mace singled and scored for the Lancers.

Victor Scalzo had an RBI double for La Salle.

Darren Macias doubled and had two of the Phantoms’ four hits.

La Salle will have next week off and then will get their CIF-SS playoff pairing, as they enter the postseason as the league’s No. 2 seed, but do so on a four-game win streak.
