Poly hadn’t lost a baseball game in 60 days.
But Salesian’s Jacob Vargas put an end to that on Monday.
Vargas went six innings on the mound and struck out seven to earn the victory.
Vargas also homered and drove in three runs to lead the Mustangs to an 11-5 victory at Poly.
Vargas allowed four earned runs and six hits.
He went 2 for 4 at the plate with that home run, scored once and drove in three runs.
Matt Loomis was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits over his six innings Monday.
Loomis walked two and struck out four.
Salesian got to Van Fichtner for four runs on four hits in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Sean Tibay homered and drove in a pair of runs for Poly and Franco Alonso went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Sean McTigue had one hit and a pair of RBIs.
Joe Masters singled and walked for Poly.
Matt Queen finished 1 for 4 and scored once for the Panthers.
Eight of Salesian’s nine starters had at least one hit and batters four through six had at least two hits each.
Luis Ramirez went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
Sean Nicholson finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a pair of runs.
Matthew Marquez also had two hits, scored twice and drove in two for the Mustangs.
Salesian pounded out 14 hits against the two Poly pitchers.
Poly will travel to Chadwick in a Prep League game today (Tuesday) at 4, but the Panthers have already wrapped up the league championship.
