From STAFF REPORTS

Maranatha headed to North Hollywood to take on undefeated Campbell Hall Friday night, and did so on a two-game losing streak.

The Minutemen had fallen to Pasadena and Azusa in consecutive weeks and trailed the Vikings 7-0 in the second quarter tonight.

But MHS quarterback Enrique Garza found his rhythm in the second quarter.

The Maranatha junior connected twice with Jack Goodman on scoring strikes of 20 and 15 yards.

MHS also converted on a 2-point conversion to take an eight-point lead to the break.

It was Jacob Moreno’s 2-point toss to Isaac Fields stretched the first-half lead to 15-7.

After the MHS defense held the Vikings scoreless in the second and third quarter, Campbell Hall scored once in the fourth period.

But Maranatha linebacker-defensive end Sabien Rivera would not allow a Campbell Hall comeback.

Rivera was a monster on defense with four sacks, including a fourth-quarter safety that gave the Minutemen a little more of a cushion.

Maranatha will host Maywood CES of Los Angeles next Friday at 7.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach LaVar Arrington: “We didn’t do anything differently (than the last two weeks). We had a lot of penalties. I told our guys that the reality is that they are LaVar Arrington’s bodyguards. We’re going to face teams who want to beat a former NFL player like me and we’re going to get everybody’s best effort. I told the players we have to stop worrying about trying to blow teams out. They understand they are not going to get a week off

Our quarterback (Garza) is learning the new scheme. I tell Enrique that ‘who you are is good enough.’ He will continue to mature and will be a Division 1 level quarterback. And then Sabien is putting up numbers (on defense) that are incredible. I don’t know if anyone in CIF makes a bigger impact on defense than Sabien.”

Box Score:
Maranatha: 0-15-0-2-(17)
Campbell Hall: 7-0-0-6-(13)

Records: Maranatha (2-2); Campbell Hall (3-1)
