From STAFF REPORTS

You could forgive the Poly girls volleyball team had they overlooked South Pasadena in Monday’s match.

It’s not that the Tigers aren’t a formidable opponent.

With a 9-5 record entering the match, Poly very much took the challenge that South Pasadena presented seriously.

But Monday’s match was that of the nonleague variety, and has very little impact on their playoff seeding.

Most of all, though, the main focus this week is getting even with Mayfield atop the Prep League standings when they meet up on Thursday at Poly.

The Panthers are 7-1 in league play and their only defeat came via sweep back on August 28 at Mayfield, and they finally get their shot on Thursday to even the score.

To Poly’s credit, however, the Panthers did not look past South Pasadena.

In fact, they earned the sweep of the Tigers by competitive scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-19 on Monday.

Ella Mao had 14 kills to lead Poly, and her twin sister, Zoey Mao, added 46 assists, 4 blocks and 7 kills.

Lauren Kidman finished with 41 assists and Debbie Hong contributed 29 digs and a pair of aces.

After the Poly-Mayfield clash, the Panthers won’t play again for two weeks.

Records: Poly (11-4 overall, 7-1 in Prep League); South Pasadena (9-6)

Remaining Schedule:
September 20: Mayfield at Poly at 4
October 4: Poly at Chadwick at 5
October 5: Poly at Flintridge Prep at 5:30
October 8: Providence at Poly at 3:45
