From STAFF REPORTS

Even though a cross country meet might appear to be more of an individual challenge, it is very much a team sport.

The top five scores (times and placing) for each school competing are given a point designation and the winner is the program with the low score.

For example, having the top finisher in a race isn’t necessarily going to lead to victory, especially if the other four placers are far off the pace.

La Salle saw Margaret O’Hagan finish fourth with a time of 23:57.1.

And Alyssa Trac (24:48.6), Lia Shaw (24:53.8), Michelle Algiers (25:01.2) and Christine Holquin (25:09.5) placed sixth to ninth place, respectively.

That was enough to earn La Salle a narrow, but impressive victory.

The Lancers defeated St. Pius-St. Matthias by one point, 34-35, and Cantwell-Sacred Heart was third at 71.

La Salle’s boys finished in fifth, behind Cathedral (29), Bishop Amat (56), Bosco Tech (71), St. Paul (92) and the Lancers finished with 117.

Daniel Piesik was the top boys runner for La Salle.

Piesik finished in 16th place with a time of 16:37.

Nick Reynolds was two back of Piesik at 17:09, and Marcos Vargas finished No. 21 at 17:29.
