With the second round of Olympic League play, the Lady Minutemen are now facing opponents’ revamped line-ups designed to try to produce more points for the opposition. Today’s match was no different, as the Heralds shifted two singles players into their doubles line-ups to boost their chances of closing the gap. The score was a duplicate of their 17-1 score during their last meeting.

Singles cruised to a 9-0 sweep (Madison Kane and Malena Smith triple bageled their opponents, while Stella Wang lost one game), losing only one game along the way, while doubles went 8-1, with MHS’s #3 Rose Zhang/Shuhan Yang losing 2-6 to the revamped team of #1 singles player, Hawoo Shim, and #1 doubles player, Rachel Kosaka.

The matches of the day involved both Zhang/Yang, as well as #2 Georgia Wilder/Amanda Yee, as both came from behind to pull off, 7-5 (vs. #2) and 7-6(3) (vs. #1) wins respectively.

If #1 singles, Madison Kane keeps it up, she has the chance to make Olympic League history, by becoming the only player to win every set, 6-0. She has a way to go, but is halfway there.

#1 doubles player, Michael Wilkins is working on potentially making history of her own, should she and teammate, Aria Haver-Hill, continue their league dominance and sweep the rest of their league matches. Wilkins (who partnered with Maddie Hernandez the last two seasons) would be the first doubles player to go undefeated for two consecutive seasons. She also has the chance to become the league’s first 3-time league tourney champ.

All of these possibilities could end next week, but they are also becoming distinct possibilities as well.

MHS’s next match is against the Valley Christian Defenders, owners of the league’s second best record. The match is at 3 p.m. at Occidental College. The Lady Minutemen are now 8-1 on the year and 5-0 in league.
