From STAFF REPORTS

Mayfield looked to be down and out Wednesday night when the Cubs hosted Villa Park in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs.

The Prep League’s co-champions, however, weren’t ready to concede and forced a fifth and deciding game with the Spartans.

Villa Park, though, to their credit, quelled the Mayfield rally and earned the first-round playoff victory in five games.

The Spartans earned the 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 18-25 and 15-13 win.

Caroline Ivankovich had a team-high 16 kills, but the Cubs got a very balanced effort on Wednesday.

Charlotte Pizante contributed 12 kills, Emerson Gohrick added 9 kills and Haley Eaves had 8 kills.

Maeve Davitt had a team-high 44 digs and Ellie Watkins led Mayfield with 49 assists.

The other two Prep League teams from the Pasadena area, Poly and Westridge, both play their first-round postseason matches Thursday night.

Poly (15-5) hosts El Segundo (11-12) at 6, and Westridge (11-11) travels to Glendora (22-5) to take on the Palomares League champions at 5.

Quotable:

Mayfield coach Hugo Ayala: “It was a good year, even though this wasn’t our goal. But we surprised a lot of people this year. We practiced every day focused on getting better.”

Records: Villa Park (10-15); Mayfield (18-11)
