From STAFF REPORTS

To say Poly coach Ryan Katsuyama enjoyed Wednesday’s victory would be quite an understatement.

Poly hadn’t defeated rival Flintridge Prep since 2013 and his Panthers were on the outside looking in at an automatic playoff berth.

But Poly used a balanced effort and dominated Prep throughout, 11-4, in a Prep League battle.

Sean Zheng and Alec Walsh had 3 goals each for Poly.

Hakop Kaplanyan and Matthew Gamboa scored two goals apiece and accounted for all four goals for the Rebels.

Matt Arredondo scored twice for the Panthers, and Austin Lee, Jack Duncan and Diego Jaime had one goal each.

Prep’s Ben Brookbanks blocked 10 Poly shots in goal and Chandler Washington had a game-high 16 saves for the Panthers.

The Rebels and Panthers both had 34 shots on goal.

Poly will travel to Brentwood on Tuesday.

The Panthers hope to pay the second-place Eagles back for an 11-6 setback last week.

Prep will finish out their regular season schedule at Brentwood as well.

The Rebels face off with the Eagles on Wednesday at 4.

Quotable:

Poly coach Ryan Katsuyama: “Our victory today was significant for several reasons: it was our first win over Flintridge Prep since the 2013 season. We needed to beat Flintridge Prep to give us an outside chance at a tie for third place in the Prep League and put us in position to be an automatic qualifier for the CIF Division 5 playoffs, and lastly, it was senior day! Our kids played great today. We stuck to our game plan and played a nearly perfect game on both ends of the pool.”

Prep League Standings:
