When Heritage Christian quarterback Cameron Bell followed the lead of his offensive lineman and scored on a 1-yard run some nine minutes into Friday’s Olympic League title game, the Warriors would go the next 39 minutes without relinquishing the lead.

Maranatha reacted well, when, one play later, Zack McClendon scored on an approximate 60-yard sprint to get to the Minutemen to within 7-6.

Instead of kicking the point after attempt to tie the game, though, Maranatha tried for a 2-point conversion, and it did not succeed.

On its ensuing kickoff, Maranatha again went the aggressive route and attempted an onsides kick, but that didn’t fool the Warriors either.

Heritage Christian would go on to dominate Maranatha, 48-13, to win their first league championship in 7 years.

Sam McCutcheon ran for nearly 175 yards and scored on TD runs of 3, 35 and 1 yard, which were the Warriors’ final three scores of the night.

The win kept Heritage Christian perfect in 2018 at 10-0.

Isaac Fields gave Maranatha some hope early in the second half.

His 86-yard catch-and-run from Enrique Garza for a TD got the Minutemen to within 21-13.

But Heritage Christian outscored the Minutemen, 27-0, the rest of the way and closed out the league championship.

McClendon rushed for north of 100 yards and the one score.

Tommy Sykes was outstanding for Heritage Christian on both sides of the ball.

The Warriors junior used his speed on offense to set up a number of scores and he had two of the three interceptions Friday night of Garza.

Michael Polio had the third and final pick and he brought it deep into Maranatha territory and that too turned into more points.

Nasir Marshall, David Rozo and Noah Griffin each had rushing TD’s on a night the Warriors neared 500 yards on the ground.

Fields had five catches for over 100 yards receiving for Maranatha and the long TD.

The Minutemen fall to 3-1 in Olympic League play, and claim second place.

The game got very chippy, which included a lot of penalties late, and an ejection or two.

Both teams will wait for their playoff pairings when CIF releases the brackets on Sunday at 10 a.m.
