Lancer Janell Currier fires a kill in a recent match. She helped PCC earn its second straight SCC North Division championship on Friday night.
An opening conference loss didn’t deter the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team, which went 6-1 over the next seven division matches to win its second consecutive South Coast Conference North Division championship. PCC clinched the title on Friday in a hard-fought sweep at Chaffey College, 25-23, 25-21, 27-25.
The Lancers evened their overall final regular season record at 12-12 and finished conference play at 6-2. Last year, PCC went undefeated at 8-0 to win the title. Lancers head coach Mike Terrill now has two conference titles under his belt in just three seasons in charge of the program. It is the first time in PCC volleyball history that the Lancers won titles in back-to-back seasons.
Pasadena now has 4 conference titles, all accomplished in the past 10 years. The Lancers won an outright overall SCC crown in 2009 and the co-championship with El Camino in 2012. The conference split to two 5-team divisions in 2016.
By winning the conference crown, the Lancers are back in the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. They will likely play in the Play-In Round on Saturday, Nov. 17 at a site and opponent to be determined. The seedings for the SoCal Regional Playoffs will be announced later this week.
Against Chaffey, the Lancers relied on freshman outside hitter Janell Currier, who scored 11 kills with eight digs, three blocks, and two aces. Frosh opposite Abby Martin added 10 kills while redshirt freshman middle blocker Danielle Johnson tallied six kills, two aces and two solo blocks. Freshman outside hitter Leslie Rivera, a SCC MVP candidate, had five kills, three aces and 16 digs and sophomore libero Pamela Galvan collected 18 digs and served four aces. Letterman middle blocker Jada O’Mally chipped in five kills and two blocks while setters Nikki Hernandez (18) and Tehya Topalian (14) combined for 32 assists.
