Four newcomers represented the Caltech women’s swimming & diving team at this weekend’s 2018 Winter Invitational hosted by the University of La Verne.

On Sunday, grad student Danica Adams (Novato, Calif. / UC Berkeley) took sixth in the 200 Back Finals, but had the better time in her second-place prelimary run (2:06.76) where she became the new Caltech record holder by nearly six seconds. Freshman teammate Isabel Swafford (Boise, Id. / Boise) then competed in a 200 Back trial where she clocked in at 2:05.79 and got her fourth school record of the season, beating out Adams by nearly a full second. Swafford later swam the 100 Free Final that same day with her 53.70 good enough for a sixth-place finish.

On Saturday, Swafford, along with Adams got things started for the women’s team in the 200 Free ‘A’ Final when Swafford swam a 1:56.75 and Adams touched the wall in 1:59.31 in the ‘B’ Final. Both swimmers really began to shine in the 200 Breast Finals, however where Adams’ 59.43 netted her a second-place finish over third-place finisher Swafford (59.50), the newly minted Caltech record holder. Adams’ time came within four-tenths of a second of Swafford’s new record in the event. Additionally, freshman Isabella Dula (Tuscaloosa, Ala. / Maggie L. Walker) competed in the 200 Free and 100 Back preliminaries and freshman Yuying Lin swam for the Beavers in the 100 Breast prelims.

Head Coach Andy Brabson and the Beavers will return to the pool next year when they travel to the University of Redlands to meet the Bulldogs, in addition to Chapman on Jan. 12.
