Freshman Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) of the Caltech women’s basketball team scored 20 points for the 10th time this season when the Beavers traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday.

Like senior teammate Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California), Saikumar is chasing a scoring record of her own. The rookie is 53 points away from surpassing Kate Lewis ’17 on the single-season scoring list and will need to average just over 13 points per game in order to accomplish it. Meanwhile, Saikumar is in the midst of one of the most prolific freshman seasons in the history of the program and added to her stellar campaign with nine-made field goals on Saturday. The freshman also blocked five shots and picked up 10 rebounds to secure a double-double.

Peng, meanwhile scored 15 points and is now just 29 points behind Stephanie Wong ’16’s career scoring record. The senior played the entire game for the visiting team and also knocked down a trio of three-pointers. Additionally, senior Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) posted a double-double of her own with an impressive 13 points and 14 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end. Collectively, the Beavers played the Athenas tough despite a second quarter let down and trailed CMS by just three points in second-half scoring.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will look to get back on track when they host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
