Down 13-6 in the fifth set in its South Coast Conference North Division opener Friday, the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team mustered a 9-0 rally that gave the Lancers an improbable win at Rio Hondo College, 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13.

PCC (8-5 overall) won its fourth straight match and beat Rio Hondo for the second time this season.

“We were outplayed for much of the match, but the team never stopped fighting and the players belief in themselves and each other shone through,” said PCC head coach Mike Terrill. “Michelle Boyd served nine straight and our block put pressure on them. Our ball control from the back row put our setter in a great position to tee up our attackers.”

Rayleen Rivera pounded a kill for match point. Rivera and fellow outside hitter Paige Clingaman delivered 14 kills each. Monica Hernandez added 17 digs and served five aces. Boyd tallied 10 digs and Rivera 9 digs.

The Lancers next play at Chaffey on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in a 6 p.m. conference match.
