If there’s one thing Prep League volleyball coaches know about Mayfield, it’s that the Cubs will battle to the end.

Chadwick came in Tuesday night and cruised in the first game and went up early in the second.

But Stephen Bernabe’s Cubs scratched and clawed their way back into the match and pushed it to the limit.

In the end, though, Claire Lenihan’s 19 kills, including the match clincher was too much.

The Dolphins claimed a 25-15, 12-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-10 victory and finds itself just one-half game behind Poly, and one game behind Westridge in the second half chase for the league championship.

Maddie Reed led Mayfield (12-11-1, 5-3) with 10 kills and Olivia Smith added six kills for the Cubs.

“We really battled all night, but we can’t give away that many points in close matches,” Bernabe said. “We still have Westridge and our rematch with Poly. Going forward, if we stay consistent, we can still end up in the top two or three in league.”

Maeve Davitt had 31 digs for Mayfield.

After being able to even the match at a game a piece, Mayfield started the third set up 6-2, but Chadwick (10-5, 6-2) clawed back and won 23 of the next 33 points and took the third game.

Monique Childress had 40 assists for the Dolphins and Jessie Doty added 15 kills.

Mayfield will host winless Firebaugh on Thursday at 6:30.
