2016 California Sportswriter of the Year, as awarded by the Associated Press Sports Editors, Sam Farmer will address Pasadena Quarterbacks at its Friday luncheon, October 14, at Brookside Golf Club… in the shadow of the Rose Bowl. He was a three-year finalist. Farmer is in his 21st season covering the NFL for the Los Angeles Times.

He’s had unique assignments such as traveling with an officiating crew, spending a week behind the scenes with Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks, spending a Sunday watching games with John Madden, sitting next to Al Michaels in the Monday Night Football broadcasting booth, and climbing Mount Rainier – or at least to base camp – with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Farmer was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and graduated from Occidental College in 1988 with a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature/Letters. He resides in Glendale.

He began his career working at small newspapers in the Pacific Northwest, before moving onto the San Jose mercury News. There he covered the Oakland Raiders for five seasons. At the Times, he has also been a beat writer covering the NBA, PGA Tour, and college football and basketball.

Joining Farmer on the podium, preceding his talk, is Ken Drain, Rio Hondo Prep head football coach. Drain is expected to bring a co-captain or two. Quarterbacks donate to the high school football program whose head coach speaks, and to the National Football Foundation.
