All season, Mayfield’s singles players and especially its No. 1 player, Lauren Panajotovic, have gotten most of the credit for the Cubs success.

And in those cases, rightfully so.

But Mayfield’s doubles teams have been clutch over the last month and never more so on Thursday.

The Cubs’ doubles won 6 of their 9 matches on Thursday afternoon, and they needed all of it, as Mayfield squeaked past Chadwick, 10-8, to win the Prep League championship.

The Mayfield singles won just 4 of 9 matches, and had the doubles lost just one of the matches it won, the match would have been declared a tie and it would have been decided on points.

No. 1 Jack Baggott and Ciara Venegas won matches 6-2 and 6-0 before dropping one of their three.

No. 2 Ariana and Alexia Saigh also won two of their three matches with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

But it was the Cubs No. 3 team of Mary Catherine Smith and Julianna Bayramayan that grinded out victories of 6-4 and 7-5 in winning two of their three matches that turned out to be huge.

Panajotovic did her part, but the star No. 1 player actually lost a set.

Panajotovic dropped her first match to Chadwick’s Casie Wooten, 6-2, before going on to victories over Tiffany Huang and Lauren Tong by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Carly Hill, the Cubs No. 2 singles player, earned victories of 6-0 and 6-2, over Huang and Tong.

Hill’s only loss came to Wooten, 6-2.

Wooten went 3-0 for Chadwick, but it wasn’t enough.
