Maranatha’s first season in the CIF-SS Division 4 coincided with their youngest, most inexperienced team in years. That inexperience showed as they headed to Westminster to face the Aztecs of La Quinta.

The Lady Minutemen hung tight in the first two rounds, going 2-4 in the first round and 3-3 in the second round, before running out of gas and going 1-5 in the final round of play. T

A bright spot of the day was the play of #1 singles, Angela Hsieh, who swept her opponents for a 14th straight match, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

After a slow start to the season at the unfamiliar #1 spot, unsure of herself, playing tentatively, and going 4-5, Angela has responded in a big way, going 42-0 since, including against the top players from #8 ranked, Mark Keppel and FSHA.

No. 2 singles, Malena Smith won one, going 1-6, 3-6, 6-1,
No.1 doubles, Madelyn Hernandez and Michael Wilkins won one, going 1-6, 6-0, 1-6.
No. 2 doubles, Reagan Atallah and Rose Zhang won one, 2-6, 6-4, 0-6.

Of note, this marked the end of Sophia Garnica’s MHS tennis career.

The young Maranatha squad knew it would be a challenging year, relative to the team’s success in recent years, but they vowed to keep improving throughout the year, and they succeeded.

The team can hold its head high and is already looking forward to preparing for next season!

In the meanwhile, the prestigious CIF Individuals Tournament awaits Angela, Malena, Madelyn, and Michael, who qualified to represent the Olympic League in two weeks.
