The 2016 volleyball season had great promise for La Salle.

The Lancers went undefeated in the Del Rey League (8-0), and many expected them to make at least a finals run in the CIF-SS Division 3 finals, not to mention a potential deep run at the state playoffs.

But sports can humble even the most skilled teams, and La Salle was as talented as anyone in the Division 3 bracket.

Foothill took the first two games. La Salle (21-13) showed the heart of a champion, and took the next two games to force a fifth and final game.

The Knights (17-10), though, were able to bounce back after losses in set’s 3 and 4, and took game 5 to end the La Salle season.

Foothill won via scores of 25-19, 25-19, 16-25, 17-25, 16-14, to stun the Lancers faithful.

Claire Forrest led La Salle with 12 kills.

Sofia Sanchez added 10 kills, and Vanessa Ramirez had 27 digs.

Tamia Cephus chipped in with 23 assists and 4 aces.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Tiare Tuitama: “We had a good fight. Our season ended short. I’m glad we came back, because it’s hard to do after losing the first two sets. I am proud of the whole team and that we’re league champs, which we hadn’t been in two years. We have a lot of returning players for the 2017 season. We’re already looking forward to next year.”
