Senior Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Junipero Serra) netted another four goals as Caltech men’s water polo fell to the Whittier College Poets, 20-11, on Saturday morning.
The Poets won the opening sprint and within 13 seconds managed to score the first goal of the game. Caltech did not panic, however, as Bradley responded just 18 seconds later. With the high-scoring tone already set, both teams proceeded to pepper their opponent’s goal. Whittier broke through the Caltech defense after another minute-and-a-half with three unanswered goals to extend the lead to 4-1.
With 39 seconds left on the clock, Bradley got the ball and scored for the second time of the quarter, cutting the deficit to two, but the momentum was short lived as Whittier scored a fifth to end the period.
Trailing by three, the Beavers came out fighting and scored their third goal of the game early in the second quarter. The Poets did not waste any time scored again to stretch the lead back out to three, but once more the Beavers answered when, with two minutes left in the half, sophomore Charles Ross (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) scored his first goal of the game, making the score 6-4. Caltech’s defense continued to hold the high-powered Poets offense in check until, with less than two minutes left in the half, Whittier broke through again with another three goals to extend the margin to five at 9-4 by halftime. After the break, the Poets went on to outscore the Beavers, 11-7, to claim the victory.
The Beavers also celebrated Senior Day as Jordan Bonilla, Bradley, Connor Lee, Tim Menninger, Parth Shah and Tomas Tussie played their final match in their home pool.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will make the short trip to Eagle Rock to challenge Occidental College (4-17, 1-5) on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
