Freshman defender Jesus Garcia was named an All-Southern California Region selection after helping his Pasadena City College men’s soccer team advance to the regional finals. Garcia was widely considered one of the South Coast Conference’s and region’s top defensive players.

Garcia, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound talent from El Monte High, was utilized not only as a key on defense, but involved in the Lancers’ offense. He scored six goals and added three assists, scoring several times on header shots off corner kicks. He also scored the team’s lone goal in its season-ending loss in the third round of regionals at Oxnard on Nov. 26.

Garcia was one of six Lancers to be chosen to the All-South Coast Conference North Division Team. Garcia, freshman midfielder and strong defensive talent Joshua Arevalo (Glendale HS), and sophomore forward Diego Rodriguez (Kennedy High), who had only two assists but frequently used his speed to create plays in opponent territory, were each All-SCC First Team selections.

The Second Team Lancers featured sophomore forward Artin Almary (Glendale Hoover), tied for the team lead in points with 17 (seven goals, three assists), skilled midfielder and playmaker Manuel Chavez (six goals, four assists), and frosh goalie Kristopher Guerra, who had a 1.66 goals against average, made 70 saves and recorded four shutouts in 15 starts.

PCC finished in second place in the powerful SCC North and was the No. 7 seed for the regionals. Under the direction of first-year head coach Henry Cabral, the Lancers defeated No. 10 Chaffey and upset No. 2 Golden West during their playoff run.
