From STAFF REPORTS

Poly finally got back on the court six days after losing its first game of the season.

Holy Martyrs of Encino held the Panthers to just 29 points last week in the finals of the Poly Tournament.

Fast forward those six days, and Poly looked like Poly again, which much credit going to seniors John Genske and Ryan Bowen.

The Panthers defeated Rio Hondo Prep, 74-46, on Friday night in the Prep League opener for both schools.

Genske scored 21 and had team highs with 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Bowen had 25 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point line.
“Our overall performance was pretty good. We were able to take advantage of our strengths that we had against Rio effectively for the most part,” Bowen said. “Offensively, we were consistent and aggressive. However, throughout the game, we made lots of minor mistakes like not staying wide in transition, help side defense was a little shaky, and we just have to keep in mind that we are taking the best shots that we can get each possession. This game was proof that we are getting better as a team.”

Genske made 5 of his 7 shots from the field and 11 of his 12 free-throw attempts.

“We played pretty well offensively,” Genske said. “We shot well and rebounded. Our transition wasn’t amazing but we still tried to run the floor on Rio which was good, and they did a good job of limiting us to half-court offense. Our defense wasnt great but we’re getting better each game.”

Brendan Fong had a very solid game with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Jackson Hayes had 10 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.

Poly will be back on the court today (Saturday) taking on St. Luke’s of Sydney, Australia, at 7 p.m.

The Lady Panthers will play at 5:30 just before the boys tip off.
