Freshman Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) led the Caltech women’s basketball team with 19 points on 50-percent shooting and the Beavers recorded their second victory of the year at the Illinois Institute of Technology on Monday afternoon. Peng keyed her team with five three-pointers and picked up six rebounds.

Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) tied Peng for the team lead with five assists. The sophomore also continued her recent hot streak by scoring nine points to go with seven rebounds and a team-high three steals. Senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) meanwhile came up two points shy of a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down at team-best 10 rebounds.

Caltech came out firing early. Peng hit back to back three pointers for the Beavers’ first two baskets as the visitors rattled off the first 14 points of the contest before Illinois Tech made a shot. The Beavers continued their scoring outburst and Peng would add another three pointer before the quarter ended with a 22-2 Caltech lead. Down twenty, the Scarlet Hawks were able to cut into the Beavers lead with a small run, but Caltech fired back and took control of the second half of the quarter. Lewis and sophomore Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) were a strong post presence for the Beavers during that span. Eiden led the team with three blocks and scored 11 points off the bench.

Caltech ultimately held the Scarlet Hawks to 20.9 percent overall shooting, 18.8 percent from three, and 40.6 percent from the free throw line. The Beavers additionally outrebounded their opponents, 53-44.

Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers break for the holidays before they return to
action at home on December 28th at 3 p.m. against University of California, Santa Cruz.
