Senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) gave Caltech life late in the game with a double-double, but the Beavers were unable to overcome visiting Whittier College in Monday’s second meeting of the season between the two SCIAC foes.

Lewis paced the Beavers with 13 points almost evenly distributed throughout all four quarters. She also led her team on the glass with 10 rebounds and continues to lead the SCIAC in that category. Three of her rebounds came on the offensive end and she also improved her free throw shooting percentage by finishing a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.

The rest of the team also did their part from the free throw line. Sophomore Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace), like Lewis had 13 points and made five of her six free throw attempts. Freshman Samantha D’Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis), meanwhile, led Caltech with 18 points and went 8-for-12 from the line. The guard also contributed five rebounds and five assists to make up her balanced stat line.

D’Costa’s most crucial surge of the game came in the third quarter when she scored seven points, including her first field goal of the game and gave the Beavers their first lead of the game on a fastbreak layup with just under three minutes to go in the period. The Caltech lead would hold until the end of the quarter, at which point the Poets would take ownership of the lead back by outscoring the Beavers 27-14 in the fourth quarter.

Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will look to regroup and get back in the win column on Wednesday when they visit Occidental College.
