Freshman Samantha D’Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) contributed heavily to a 24-point Caltech fourth quarter, though the Beavers were unable to mount enough points to steal a win at Occidental College.

D’Costa led the way with 17 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. She also went 3-for-5 on three-pointers and was responsible for all of the Beavers’ points from deep. In addition to leading Caltech on the scoreboard, the guard also contributed to an all-around stat line with three rebounds and three steals.

Teammates senior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) and freshman Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) also reached double-figures. Lewis scored 11 points to go with four rebounds and two steals while Peng scored 14 points and added six steals and five rebounds.

Caltech kept things competitive with its SCIAC rival in the first half but after succumbing to a 24-5 third quarter, D’Costa and the Beavers found themselves in a hole too big to climb out of. They did, however come together to outscore the Tigers 21-10 in the fourth quarter and end the game on a positive note.

Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will continue SCIAC play when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Saturday’s road game.
