Myles Cecil, considered by most to be the best defensive player in the area, committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Wednesday evening.

The Pasadena Sports Now Defensive Player of the Year had 60-plus schools interested in his services.

But the 18-year old defensive end liked both the football program, and equally, the academics.

Cecil was part of 22 seniors who led La Salle to their first two Angelus League victories in the school’s 3-year history in the league.

The Lancers also won their first playoff game in 9 years, after a first-round victory over Mayfair.

Cecil led the area with 14 sacks and his team with 90 tackles.

This past weekend, he earned the Defensive MVP award at the Blue-Grey All-American game at the Oakland Coliseum.

“My senior year was a blessing,” Cecil said. “Just being accepted, and being a transfer, meant a lot. I just grew here as a player and a person. I couldn’t have done any of this without my coaches and teammates.”

Russell Gordon looked his former player in the eye and said with some emotion how proud he is that Cecil represented his program.

“He is a kid of great character,” Gordon said. “His academics are bar-none, and on top of the list. I know you’ll flourish and sky’s the limit. I can’t wait to see you play on Saturday’s.”

Cecil elaborated on his decision.

“I just really love the education and atmosphere and being right on the beach,” Cecil said. “It’s a beautiful place. The coaches are top of the line, and the school is math and engineering predominantly, and what I love in a school.”

Perhaps his greatest trait is how much he wants his friends, family and teammates to know this accomplishment is as much about them as it is him.
