It didn’t take long to realize why Flintridge Prep is now 18-2 overall and 7-0 in Prep League play.

The Rebels outscored Poly 37-15 in the first two quarters thanks to a balanced attack and the game was never in doubt.

Taylor Yoshida’s scored 22 points and Renae Tamura added 15 more, as the Rebels trounced the Panthers, 60-32, on the road to extend their lead in the Prep League.

“Our team did very well on defense and our press was really effective,” Yoshida said. “Our transition was really good and is our identity. Our whole team is part of it and everyone steps up and has a role. If someone isn’t having a big day, someone else will pick it up.”

Sarah Johnson led Poly with 16 points, while Kristin Toyota and Kylie Kishi had 5 points apiece for the young Panthers.

Kaitlyn Chen added 9 for the first-place Rebels.

“I think we kept them off-balance on defense, which led to some turnovers and easy baskets on the offensive side,” Prep coach Kevin Kiyomura said. “We push team, or promote team, so they move the basketball really well. They’re told to take the best shot. We just lock it down on defense and get stops.”

Prep will travel to Rio Hondo Prep on Friday, while Poly will host Mayfield next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a Prep League game.
