Any time someone saw Muir play football this season, the first athlete they invariably noticed on the field was Elijah Blades.

The senior not only excelled as a wide receiver, he also played several positions on the defensive side.

Blades played corner, safety and even linebacker when needed by Mustangs’ coach Antyone Sims.

The first thing we heard from Muir officials was that Blades was heading to the University of Florida in August of 2017.

Blades made news, however, by de-committing to Florida less than a week ago.

We spoke to his coach on Monday evening for some clarity.

“I think (the reason he de-committed) was because he wants to be closer to home,” Sims said. “I think it’s narrowed down to 3, with USC, Oregon and Nebraska being those schools.”

Blades will end all the speculation on Wednesday at Muir’s gym at 1 p.m.

“He wanted to look at other opportunities, but Florida is still in the mix.”

Sims, though, did acknowledge it would be “unusual” for someone to de-commit a week before the National Signing Day and then pick the school he just de-committed from.

“Wherever he decides to go is going to get a young kid with all the potential in the world,” Sims said. “He is capable of being a premier player. He’s learned to be a better teammate and had worked and practiced much harder this year.”
