From Staff Reports

Mayfield fell in the most cruel of circumstances Tuesday afternoon at Occidental College.

The Cubs tied Burbank through regulation, 2-2.

But Burbank scored 3 goals to one for Mayfield in the shootout, and the Bulldogs move on.

Nadia O’Reilly and Maddie Joseph both scored second-half goals.

The loss, though, can’t take away from a record season, including the first two wins over Prep League rival Poly in 15 years.

Mayfield coach Lachlan Cameron: “It was a frustrating game as we started flat and didn’t get going until the second half. We gave away a cheap corner and then failed to mark their biggest threat who ghosted in unmarked to score from that corner. We lost our right back early on in the game due to a head knock and one of our strikers to a recurring knee injury as well. The second half was much better and we took control of the game and scored two goals fairly early on from Nadia and MJ, but were undone by a controversial long throw later in the second half that led to their equalizer. We didn’t capitalize on a lot of late game pressure from us and in the lottery of penalties, we lost. It was a fairly contested game with a few exceptions. Most notably we had to send one of our girls to the emergency room after essentially being assaulted in an off the ball incident that surprisingly only gained the opposing player a yellow card. Other than that it was an even tempered game where both teams had chances and unfortunately had to be decided by penalties.”

Box Score:
Burbank: 1-1-(2)
Mayfield: 0-2-(2)
