Willett dropped an entire half second in the prelim session to beat the two-year old mark by .11 and qualify for the evening’s consolation final heat, in which he improved by one place while trimming another .15 to finish 12th overall in a 21.31.

Classmate Henry Steiner (Petaluma, Calif. / Casa Grande) also re-set and re-broke his own 200 IM record, coming in nearly two seconds under his rookie year mark in the prelims and shaving another .20 off at night to touch in 1:54.87, good for a Caltech individual meet-high seventh place overall finish.

The Beavers’ only other finals action came in the 200 Free Relay, where freshman Thomas Gallup (Houston, Texas / Phillips Exeter Acad.) led off in a personal-best 21.98 as Caltech placed eighth thanks to a Whittier College disqualification.

Earlier in the day, junior Avikar Periwal (Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair) had the honor of the first men’s swim of the morning and did not disappoint, cutting three seconds off his time at last year’s championships (4:53.17) to finish just out of the finals picture in 23rd place, one spot behind sophomore Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood). Other highlights included Gallup’s then-personal record of 22.26 in the 50 Free as well as PRs from junior Alexander Bourzutschky (Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair) and seniors Leon Ding (Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park) and Kyle Seipp (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / Baldwin Senior).

The Friday meet schedule looks much fuller for the Beavers, with the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 400 Medley Relays set to be contested.
