Poly proved Saturday night that ‘Mother Nature’ wasn’t going to affect their playoff run.

The Panthers were supposed to play Friday night in Santa Barbara, but the rain caused a mudslide on the 101 Freeway, and the game was postponed until Saturday.

John Genske, Ryan Bowen and Jackson Hayes shrugged it, and a slow start off, and downed Bishop Diego, 69-57, thanks to a 15-point advantage in the second half.

The Panthers move on to the CIF-SS Division 4-A quarterfinals at Shalhevet on Tuesday at 7.

Poly got 49 points from its big three and are off to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division

John Genske finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 7 Assist, and 4 Steals.

Ryan Bowen added 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal.

Jackson Hayes scored 16 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and had a steal.

Brendan Fong came up big with 10 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

Mateo Taylor added 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Quotable:

Senior guard Ryan Bowen: “I thought we came out from the beginning with intensity, but not lots of momentum from the opening tip off. Starting slow doesn’t give us an advantage, but from our last two games of playoffs, the first half’s gave us an idea of what the other team likes to do. As for the second half, we came out with a lot more momentum than what we had in the first two quarters. We moved the ball a lot more and we attacked the basket very aggressively, getting fouled, and extending the lead. Our overall execution has been strong, especially in the second half of the game. If we can transition our intensity and momentum that we have later in the game right at the beginning, I see us being very successful as the week continues.”

Junior guard Jackson Hayes: “Again, we started a little slow in the first and second quarters, but we really picked up in the second half. When we settled down and started playing our game, that’s when we were able to strive. We had a few good stops on defense and started hitting our shots. Overall, we fought our hardest the whole game and came up with the win.”

Senior guard John Genske: “We started out really slow in the first half. We turned the ball over a lot and made a lot of mental errors. However, we rallied as a team in the second half and executed really well. I was really happy to see Brendan (Fong) play as passionately as he did tonight. He’s been very passive in the past, but tonight he was extremely vocal and he showed a ton of confidence and drive in his play on the court.”
