Sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) scored a decisive victory at second singles but the Beavers lost to nationally-ranked visitor Brandeis University, 6-1, in a match where some matches went unfinished due to the weather conditions. Brandeis is ranked 28th in the nation.

Moriyama earned a decisive, 6-4, 6-1 victory to continue her perfect singles record so far this season. Had the rainy conditions not factored into the match being shortened, Moriyama might not have been the only Beaver to pull out a victory. Freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) lost the first set at fourth singles, but rallied back to take a 4-3 lead in the second set before play was stopped. The Owls had already clinched the match by that point. Senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar), meanwhile came a few points away from earning a point for Caltech. Caltech’s fifth singles player lost the first set, 3-6, but won the second set 6-1 before coming up short in the super tiebreaker, 10-6.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the court Friday at 3 p.m. to face off with visiting Bates College, as they look move their record back to .500.
