Senior Nasser Al-Rayes (Doha, Qatar / American School of Doha) has been named the SCIAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for a second time this season after a week capped by the Beavers’ 61-59 Senior Night victory over Pomona-Pitzer College. Al-Rayes previously earned the honor on January 23, following the Beavers’ road upset of the University of La Verne.

Al-Rayes is coming off arguably the best week of his Caltech career and also the final full week of basketball he will play in a Beavers uniform. The 6-foot-10 Doha native had 37 points and 18 rebounds when the Beavers hosted La Verne earlier in the week and followed it up with another double-double in Saturday’s win over the Sagehens. He averaged 24 points between the two games, shooting 46 percent from the field and 83 percent from the foul line. He also averaged 14 rebounds and three blocks over that span. His performance against La Verne earned him second place in program history for single-game points in NCAA play. He will mosy likely finish the season as the SCIAC leader in rebounds (9.5) and blocks (1.9) and is currently eighth in scoring (15.4).

Al-Rayes joins freshman men’s tennis player Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) as Caltech scholar-athletes to earn Athlete of the Week Honors this week.
