Lancaster took a comfortable nine-point lead into the halftime break in Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 3-A semifinal.

And while La Salle made several runs to get to within 3 on a number of occasions, the Lancers were never able to catch the Eagles.

Lancaster used 21 points from Sabrina Jeans and hit a majority of their free throws late to hold off a very feisty La Salle squad, 53-47.

Julia Macabuhay was arguably the best player on the court, but the Lancers star was the only La Salle player with double figures in points, while Lancaster had three players with at least 10 points.

Macabuhay finished with 19 points, she set up shots for her teammates and did a great job of running the offense.

But every time La Salle made a charge, Lancaster (24-5) had an answer.

Jadis Watson had 12 for the Eagles, and Kaelee Kelly chipped in with 11 points.

Nicole Ortiz and Grace Fallar had 8 points each for La Salle.

The Lancers do have a shot at qualifying for the CIF State tournament, because semifinalists in all divisions meet that requirement.

They will find out next week as the CIF Southern Section playoffs finish.

Alyssa Arroyo finished with 5 points for the Lancers.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Freedom McCullough:

“It was a Great game tonight! The lady Lancers played their hearts out. We fell a little short to a team that size-wise out-rebounded us, but we continued to compete, and compete well. It was in front of our first sellout crowd of the season. The noise level was so loud, I couldn’t even communicate with the team. But I’m so proud of the lady Lancers. for their incredible turnaround season. We accomplished two school records, most games ever won in a season (22), and reaching the semifinals for the first time in girls basketball’s history. Moving forward, we hope to receive an at-large bid to the state tournament, I would love to have the opportunity to coach the lady Lancers in the state playoffs, because I feel we can compete with anyone in our division.”
