Senior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) won a second match against a nationally ranked opponent Sunday, defeating No. 46 Brandon Griffin of No. 21 University of Mary Washington to improve to 3-1 at #1 singles this spring.

Pathireddy cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set, then got a late break at 4-3 in the second set to put Griffin away, 6-3, for the decisive victory. The senior’s lone loss in four matches this season came the day prior to West Region No. 16 Max Macey of No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Senior Ramsathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) nearly joined his twin brother in victory at court #6, where he narrowly dropped a first set tiebreak, 7-6 (4), before dominating the second, 6-0, only to fall 10-4 in a super breaker. Sophomore Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) lasted into a third set after winning his first decisively at #3 (1-6, 6-0, 6-1), while sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) rallied from a 6-1 loss in the first set to nearly force a third, 7-5. Ruthwick and Nguyen also played the tightest doubles match in an 8-5 defeat at the top spot.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers, now 1-3 on the season but with all three defeats at the hands of national Top-30 opponents, host West No. 18 Hardin-Simmons University (5-3) on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 11 a.m.
