Caltech men’s tennis senior Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) has been named the Division3tennis.com Regional Player of the Week.

Division3tennis.com Release

Pathireddy has gotten off to an exceptional start to the season, posting a 3-1 record in his return to #1 singles and defeating a pair of nationally ranked opponents after spending the majority of last season at court #3. His only loss came at the hands of the No. 16 player in the West Region, while he picked up wins against the top players for both No. 30 Brandeis University and No. 21 University of Mary Washington.

The division3tennis.com blog selects seven Players of the Week, with each blogger recognizing one player from their respective region. Caltech is eligible for both the West and Regional selections.

The Beavers have begun the season 1-3, but with all three losses coming at the hands of Top-30 opponents, while their lone win was an epic comeback against Cal Lutheran University, which tied for fourth with Caltech in the SCIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Dubbed “a nomination for match of the year” by the blog, Caltech rallied after trailing 1-4 overall and 1-6, 0-5 on one of the remaining singles courts, but stormed back to earn the key SCIAC and regional victory, thanks in part to Pathireddy defeating impressive CLU transfer Ransom Braaten 7-5, 6-2 at the top spot.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers, ranked No. 12 in the West Region entering this spring, finally get a break from nationally ranked opposition as they are set to host West No. 18 Hardin-Simmons University (5-3) on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 11 a.m.
