Freshman Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) scored the lone Caltech victory in the Beavers’ 8-1 home loss to 34th-ranked Christopher Newport University on Tuesday. Though Caltech faced strong opposition from Captains, particularly in doubles play, Zhou dispatched her opponent, 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. The tandem of Zhou and fellow freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) put up the Beavers’ biggest doubles fight, falling to Christopher Newport’s second doubles team, 8-3.

While most of the team had a rough go of things, senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) came within a few points of earning the Beavers a second point at sixth singles. Chen took the first set 6-2, but lost an up-and-down second set 7-5 to force a decisive super tiebreaker. Chen came up short in the super breaker, 10-5.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return on Saturday, March 11 when they host Abilene, Texas-native Hardin-Simmons University.
