Sooner or later, the Maranatha run that saw the Minutemen persevere through everything the postseason could throw at them was going to come to an end.
For coach Tim Tucker and seniors Sean Espinosa, Terrance Lang, Jesse Elrod and others, they wish it hadn’t happened for at least a couple of weeks.
But Xavier Esquivel’s 21 points and a late bucket by Ronnie Strapp was enough, as the Drillers took down the Minutemen, 66-62, Wednesday night at Maranatha. in the first round of the CIF State Division 2 playoffs.
Maranatha battled to the end, as usual, but this loss finally put an end to a playoff run most outside of the Minutemen gym didn’t see coming.
Terrance Lang was enormous with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
Chris Austin had 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Sean Espinosa finished a terrific career at Maranatha with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Clayton Pruitt had 13, Tahj Wright 11 and Ronnie Strapp 8 for the Drillers, who move on to play No. 2 seed Esperanza on Saturday night..
