The only thing stopping the Pasadena City College softball team of late is the 8-run mercy rule. For the third time in four days, the Lancers needed the minimum five innings to record a victory. On Friday, PCC picked up its fourth straight win overall with a season-high in runs in a 15-1, non-conference blowout over Victor Valley at Robinson Park.
The Lancers are 11-6 overall and stand in first place in the South Coast Conference North Division at 2-0 (two other teams are 1-0). PCC is currently No. 15 in region RPI, a big factor in helping to decide the postseason playoff seedings. Conference champions get automatic bids.
On Thursday, PCC blanked Rio Hondo, 8-0, in a conference tilt. Pica Madrid twirled a 3-hitter to improve to 6-2 in the circle.
Against VVC, first baseman Bree Howard continued her power surge by hitting a home run for the third time in the last four games. Her fourth-inning, solo drive over the left-center fence was her fifth dinger of the year.
Shortstop Karina Moreno led a 14-hit attack as she batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three stolen bases, a double, a walk and two RBI. PCC had two players come off the bench to collect two hits each in designated player Amber Ingram (a double) and leftfielder Taylor Schaffer. Second baseman Alex Howard and starting LF Jazmine Cabrera each knocked in two RBI.
Reliever Lauren Jackson (3-0), who entered in the second inning, pitched four shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out three for the circle victory.
Against Rio Hondo, designated player Brittany Gonzales batted 2-for-3 with three RBI while centerfielder Angel Urbina was 2-for-3 with two RBI while also throwing out a runner at home plate on defense. Cabrera also went 2-for-3. Howard crushed a fifth-inning drive over the CF fence for her then fourth home run. Pinch runner Julissa Moran stole two bases.
Next Tuesday, Mar. 14, the Lancers travel to face Chaffey College in a 3 p.m. conference game.
