Caltech women’s tennis sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) has been named the SCIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon.

SCIAC release

Moriyama keyed Caltech’s second victory over a nationally ranked opponent – both this season and in program history – in No. 38 Hardin-Simmons. After stepping up in the clutch to earn a crucial go-ahead point with a 9-7 victory at #1 doubles, the sophomore found herself down a set and trailing by a break at #1 singles with the match in the balance, but rallied to take the next 10 straight games for the 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 clinching win and put the Beavers in the conversation for their first ever national ranking in this Thursday’s release.

Moriyama joins freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School), who received the award for the week of Feb. 13, as the only two honorees in program history. Moriyama also received the former all-sports SCIAC Athlete of the Week recognition as a rookie last season.
