From Staff Reports:

First Team All-CIF:
Division 3-A: La Salle junior Julia Macabuhay
Division 3-A: Flintridge Prep senior Renae Tamura
Division 5-AA: Westridge senior Juliana Favela
Division 5-AA: Poly junior Sarah Johnson
Division 4-AA: Pasadena junior Mariah Cathcart

With three Pasadena area girls basketball teams in the CIF-SS playoffs, there was bound to be a number of local players that earned All-CIF first-team honors.

Five of the area’s best female players were named to this elite list.

Julia Macabuhay, a junior guard at La Salle, was arguably the best player around.

One thing that is not up for debate is Macabuhay’s status as the area’s most prolific scorer.

Her 24-plus points a night led La Salle (22-10) to the semifinals and carried much of the Lancers offensive load on her shoulders.

La Salle defeated Chaffey, Oxnard and Flintridge Prep before Lancaster defeated the Lancers, 53-47, just one game shy of the CIF-SS finals.

Renae Tamura averaged 13 points per game, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for Flintridge Prep.

The senior played a major role in the Rebels undefeated Prep League run.

Prep (24-3) beat Granite Hills in the second round, 55-32, and then fell to La Salle, 68-61.

Tamura, along with teammate Taylor Yoshida, joined the 1,000-point club this season.

Juliana Favela was solid all year, but never more so than the playoffs.

The Westridge senior scored 18 points per night, grabbed 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals each game.

The Tigers shocked the division with wins over Calvary Chapel Downey, California Lutheran and Coachella Valley before Crean Lutheran took Westridge out in the Division 5-AA semifinals.

Mariah Cathcart was a huge part in Pasadena becoming relevant again.

The Bulldogs junior scored 15 points per night, had 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals per game.

Cathcart was part of a program that won more games this season (22) than the previous two seasons combined.

Sarah Johnson scored 18 points and had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for Poly (17-6).

The Panthers made a solid run in the Division 5-AA playoffs.

Poly defeated The Webb School, 38-32, and earned a 46-40 win at Buckley before falling to Pilibos, 47-42.

Poly (17-6) finished 8-4 in the Prep League, which was good enough for third place.
