Senior brothers Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) and Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) picked up a victory over the 22nd-ranked doubles team in the nation as Caltech men’s tennis came up shy of a team victory over No. 32 Colby College, 6-3.

The Beavers are now 3-5 overall, with all five losses having come at the hands of nationally ranked opposition.

The Pathireddys, matched up against Colby’s Carl Reid and Vlad Murad, came out on top 8-3 to score the second point of the day for Caltech after sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) and Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) won their match at #2, 8-6. The twins’ win marks their first joint victory over a nationally ranked doubles team.

When singles play came about, the Beavers fought hard but were unable to hold on to their 2-1 doubles lead. Slotted in at #5 singles, rookie sensation Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) picked up the Beavers’ lone singles point when he defeated Shaw Speer, 6-3, 6-2 for his fourth straight win. Li, meanwhile, took Zale Shah to three sets but ended up on the wrong side of things in the end, falling 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Sathwick Pathireddy also pushed for the first set in his match but ultimately fell a bit short of earning the Beavers a potential fourth point.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will be back at home this Sunday, Mar. 26 when they host the University of California, Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (4-4) at 11 a.m.
